What Am I To Do With You Hanukkah?
Oh Hanukkah. I have so many mixed feelings. I want to enjoy Hanukkah as another Jewish holiday but I just can’t. I resent Hanukkah. Why??? It gets too much attention. The wrong kind of attention, that spreads ignorance about Judaism. At this time in my life I am not mature enough to move past that. I am a baby, I am immature, I am an unreasonably frustrated person.
Hanukkah is a minor holiday but with the attention it gets you would think it was a High Holiday. Back off Hanukkah! Christmas is the Christians most important Holiday. I am perfectly ok with it getting all the attention it deserves in December. Down with the phrase “Happy Holidays”! Say Merry Christmas, it is Christmas time after all. If you want to say Happy Holidays to me, break it out in September/Octoberish.
And to all you fellow Chosen people out there… Stop mixing the two Holidays. Ideas such as Chrismukkah, Hanukkah Harry, Hanukkah Bush, and Jewish Christmas make me cringe. These terms spread ignorance. There are too many people that actually think we do these things! Observant Jews do not partake in any of these! They are not real!
Respect Christmas for what it is. It is THE Holiday for the majority of the gentile population in the U.S. Admire friend’s lights and trees. Enjoy the Christmas sales in stores and extra day off work. Partake in a movie and some Chinese Food. And if you are not an immature young adult whom resents this time of year because of actions beyond your control then enjoy Hanukkah! LIGHT IT UP!
