A Dessert Themed Week
Last week was Hanukkah, here is a late Happy Hanukkah! Some extra baking happened because of the holiday. Sufganiyot of course, and we tried out the new fad of stained glass cookies. Then we tried out the next recipe in The Beekman 1802 Heirloom Dessert Cookbook.
Sufganiyot, spelling debatable, are Jelly doughnuts. They are a traditional holiday dish, partly because they are fried and oil is the theme of Hanukkah food. I filled half with Saving Summer’s Red Currant Jelly and half with Raspberry Jelly. The Raspberry was the favorite for sure.
Check out that amazing Jelly color 😉
Next add some powdered sugar.
Last year I made them ahead of time and they didn’t keep well. This year I had them all ready to be fried and we ate them fresh, after dinner.
Delicious! They turned out perfect!
The girls have been begging me to make Stained Glass Cookies which are essentially sugar cookies with a cut out in the middle where you place crushed hard candy. They are amazingly gorgeous cookies and fun to make, but! they don’t taste great. The combo of sugar cookie and Jolly Rancher doesn’t work. The combo of soft and hard… eh….
Hamsas, Magen Davids, and Dreidels! Oh my! Aurora was super creative and had the genius idea to punch out Magen Davids and Dreidels from the Hamsas.
Impressed? The mini Hamsas are my favorite.
We continued the baking trend and made the next dessert in the cookbook we are working through. This week it was Vanilla Panna Cotta Surprise. Surprise! There is lemon curd in the middle! Nom nom nom!
Aurora is a picky eater and very skeptical of what we have been making but she enjoys helping.
The Panna Cotta didn’t turn out as firm as I would have liked and I suspect the Kosher Fish Gelatin I used. I need to remember to increase the amount of Fish Gelatin in a recipe in the future.
Though it was not as firm as it was supposed to be, it was delicious. I made the girls two without the “surprise” in the middle and they licked their bowls clean.
I finished up the week with a mini project. Now that we are in the middle of a Minnesota Winter I have really been missing my plants. We went on a field trip to Home Depot and bought some houseplants. Plants make me happy!
Have a great week!
