How to Set Up Your Growing Tables
It is still early in the seedling season and we only have a few things planted but I want to share our set up. We built tables for our plants that are sized for our pending greenhouse, so when it is done we can move the tables in and they will fit perfectly. What this means is that we are running out of space in our living room because of growing space!
The tables have space in between slats for a non-LED light rope to snake through to provide bottom heat. Remember the seedlings only need bottom heat during the germination phase. After they have sprouted remove the bottom heat because it can dry out the roots.
On top of the tables we have built a pvc light stand. We found the directions for building it here. It was super easy to make! We don’t have many lights up now, but as our seedlings increase we will put up more lights. Putting seedlings next to a sunny window is not enough; to grow strong plants you need lights. Lights should be on 12-16 hours a day. We turn ours on when we wake up and shut them off before we go to bed. Your lights should be 1-1.5 inches above the tops of your plants. The great thing about our lights is that they are on a chain that is easy to adjust.
Right now we have Parsley, Leeks, and Cauliflower growing. In the next couple weeks we will plant Tomatoes, Marigolds, Peppers, and Basil.
It is the very beginning of the 2018 growing season and I am so excited to see my gardening plans pan out!!!
